Ameeta's Story

Slice Created with Sketch.

I have the flexibility to have a meaningful GP career and do more of the things I love.

Ameeta, Central Coast GP

My GP career has given me the opportunity to work in the bustle of Sydney and more rural areas, like Alice Springs. I actually grew up in Sydney and worked as a GP there first, but I grew tired of the daily commute that chewed up my spare time. I wanted the feel of a small community and more time to do the things I love – like painting, gardening and time with family – but it was also important to me that my career offered challenges for growth.

Central Coast offered everything I was looking for in my GP career and lifestyle.

The people and opportunities in Central Coast drew me to the region. Working here isn’t like working in a big city where you feel like you are cycling through patients every day. But it also isn’t like working in a rural area, where you might be the only doctor for hundreds of kilometres.

Central Coast offers the best of all worlds to budding GPs. I work and live in a community I love.

More flexibility

One of the things my GP colleagues in Central Coast and I love the most about living here is the flexibility. I work just five hours a day, four days a week, and can still enjoy the lifestyle of my choice from my home that backs directly onto the lake.

If you’re like me, this is amazing because it gives you more time to spend with the people in your life who are important to you. I’ve been able to care for my elderly mother, who lives with me, thanks to the flexibility in my work.

I live just five minutes from my practice too, which gives me more time to sip my coffee in the morning and enjoy wine o’clock with our neighbours whilst overlooking the water in the afternoons.

Make more of an impact

You can be as involved in their treatment journeys as you choose to be. But you also have great specialists nearby in Gosford, Sydney and Newcastle, which are just one hour away. Everything is within reach, so you can practice the way you want.

And there are plenty of opportunities to be involved in educating the next generation of GPs or to be a part of boards or organisations that are working to address important health issues in our communities. I teach GPs through the local university, and it’s another part of my career that I love.
