Commonwealth Government changes to the Health Insurance Act 1973, mean access to Medicare rebates is linked to specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia. From 16 June 2021, Services Australia will use Ahpra’s Register of Medical Practitioners to determine GP access to Medicare rebates.
Vaccination against influenza (flu) remains important this year. Free flu vaccines under the National Immunisation Program will become available in April 2021. Vaccinating in autumn provides protection before the peak influenza season.

The Department of Health has changed legislation so that Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and Repatriation PBS (RPBS) medicines must be prescribed using the active ingredient names, instead of the brand name of a medicine.
The RACGP and the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) have co-designed new resources to help GPs support their patients to access the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
