Our Woven Ways: Uncovering the worries of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents

GPs can support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents and the parent-child relationship through embedding principles of cultural safety into their practice.

These include demonstrating commitment to building trust and relationships by spending time with people, having an awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and the effects of colonisation, dispossession, practices of child removal and ongoing racism.

Based on a case study and informed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of ‘being, knowing and doing’, this webinar will explore the practice skills required to effectively work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents to explore and respond to their concerns about their children’s social and emotional wellbeing.

Our Woven Ways: Supporting goal setting with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents

Continuing on with the case study explored in the third webinar of this series, Our Woven Ways: Uncovering the worries of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents, this webinar will examine ways to support goal setting with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents through culturally safe practice.

The practice skills in this demonstration show how professionals can become interested in the stories of hope and resilience in the stories of parents, which help to build confidence and motivation. These skills build trust and collaboration and help parents to describe their plans to make change in ways that will support their child’s social and emotional wellbeing.

Inclusive Care for the LGBTQ+ Community

While many LGBTQ+ people lead healthy and happy lives, research shows they experience significant health disparities when compared to the general population. These health issues are not due to being LGBTQ+ but are directly related to experiences of stigma, prejudice, discrimination, and abuse.

This education session will support healthcare practices to improve their LGBTQ+ inclusion through discussion of the following key issues:

Why do we need to be LGBTQ+ inclusive in our care? I What are the barriers to accessing care faced by the LGBTQ+ community? I What are the health disparities that result from these barriers to care? I What can you do to make your care more inclusive?
