De-colonising Social Work: Whiteness as risk in practice

Join Wiradyuri Wambuul woman Jessica Russ-Smith for this exploration and discussion of Whiteness as risk that impacts the efficacy and responsiveness of contemporary Social Work practice.

This webinar will explore Whiteness in social work and how it impacts upon our interpersonal and professional relationships, to guide social action in decolonising social work practice. This learning experience will support you to develop your practice critically and challenge Whiteness within the profession and our own practice.

Who should attend? Social Workers looking to deepen their knowledge and practice around decolonising their professional relationships and the social work profession more broadly. It is suitable for Social Work managers and Social Workers who provide supervision across all areas of practice, including private practice.

Presenter: Jessica Russ is a Wiradyuri Wambuul woman, Senior Lecturer and Academic Developer of the Indigenous Curriculum at Australian Catholic University and AASW Board Director. She is a PhD Scholar in the School of Indigenous Australian Studies at Charles Sturt University and a Social Worker.

Professional Emotion Coaching: A relation-based approach to promoting regulation and resilience in schools

This two-part interactive workshop will take an evidence-based approach and will offer participants the opportunity to develop strategies to effectively manage students’ emotional distress and challenging behaviours. It will help participants to develop an understanding of how to manage their own emotional and stress responses and enable them to support students to do the same. This workshop will support participants with a structured framework for thinking about, approaching and responding to challenges with children and young people in education settings.

The workshops will incorporate examples, group discussions, interactive activities, and will provide further opportunities for self-directed learning and reflection.

Presenters: Deborah A. Costa MAPS holds bachelor and postgraduate degrees in psychology and education, specialist qualifications in traumatic stress studies and complex trauma and a Master of Public Health. Deborah is a registered psychologist and educator who is passionate about community and population approaches to supporting the mental health of infants, children and young people.

Working with People at End of Life: A framework for understanding the social work role in palliative, end of life and bereavement care

This webinar will provide a framework for understanding palliative, end of life and bereavement care and where social workers are situated within this space. Death is not just a biomedical event but is also a social event. It impacts not just the life of the person who is dying or has died but also those around that person, including the professionals involved.

Presenters: Dr Pippa Blackburn is a social worker and researcher with a nursing background. She has worked in health and social care for nearly 30 years in a variety of roles in the UK and Australia and has specialised in palliative care and bereavement. Pippa is currently the Clinical Services Manager for the Palliative Care Service in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.

Kris Dwyer is a Social Work graduate of the University of WA and has completed post graduate qualifications in Loss, Grief and Trauma Counselling through Flinders University and a Master of Advanced Social Work Practice through Charles Sturt University.

Jamieson Lowe graduated with a Master of Social Work from Monash University in 2016. He is in his fifth year as Family Support Worker at Eastern Palliative Care, a specialist community pall care service in Melbourne. Prior to this Jamieson worked in Aged Care for 10 years as a personal care worker. In this capacity he developed a passion for care and a belief in the power of human empathy.

Trauma Informed Practice for Young People with Complex Support Needs

This 3 hour interactive virtual workshop gives an opportunity for social workers to refresh and learn through experiential activities, case study reflections and delivery of knowledge. It explores the essentials of trauma informed practice including an awareness of trauma followed by putting this into direct practice experience and examples, encouraging social workers to work through case scenarios in a step by step reflection using what they have learnt from the earlier parts of the session.

The session also includes 4 opportunities for experiential learning including activities and reflection time working through case studies.

Presenter details: BEROS (formerly known as Brisbane Emergency Response Outreach Service) is funded by Moreton Region Child Safety (in QLD) to provide support to young people 12-18 years old who are self-placing and under child protection orders.

ARROS is funded through the Department of Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs, ILC (Information, Linkages and Capacity Building NDIA) and individuals NDIS plans. ARROS works alongside young people with suspected or diagnosed intellectual and/or cognitive disabilities transitioning from care who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

The Power of Play Therapy and Addressing Trauma in Young Children

Child Centred Play Therapy provides an empirically researched approach to supporting children through the use of using a trained therapist and the medium of play. Attendance at this training session will add valuable knowledge and skills in the area of in therapeutic interventions with children that are effective and developmentally suitable.

Who should attend? Social Workers and mental health practitioners working therapeutically with children and families who have experienced/ are experiencing trauma. This training is applicable for all ranges of experience from students to established social workers.

Presenter - Kylie Ellison is a registered counsellor, registered play therapist and play therapist supervisor who has been working with children, young people and families in the human services field for the past 19 years.

Violent Relationships: A nonjudgmental approach to understanding and supporting survivors who stay

Join us for this informative webinar, as we delve into a much-needed discussion on this controversial topic of compassionately understanding and being able to support victim-survivors who remain in violent relationships. According to the most recent research, “Personal Safety Survey Data, almost 1 in 3 (32%) Australians believed that women who do not leave their abusive partners are partly responsible for violence continuing”.
