Safe and Healthy: Improving Primary Care’s Response to sexual abuse and child sexual assault

As part of the Commonwealth funded Family, Domestic and Sexual violence pilot initiative, the PHN will procure additional services to deliver an integrated model of support for victim-survivors of sexual violence and child sexual abuse (SV and CSA). These services will closely link to existing family and domestic violence services commissioned by the PHN and increase the capacity and capability of primary care to better care for victim-survivors. The scope of these services will be co-design ahead of the Request for Proposal (RFP) being released in November 2023.

Changes to the NSW Health mask wearing policy and recommendations for primary care providers

From 30 August 2023, NSW Health changed the mask wearing policy which includes changes to mask wearing in NSW hospitals. Use of face masks in general practice medical centres and pharmacies is no longer nationally mandated. However, both the RACGP and NSW Health continue to recommend mask use.

To help health care professionals develop resilience, feel good and function effectively, the Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network (HNECC PHN) is inviting primary care professionals and their families to participate in a unique wellbeing initiative called The Lift Project.

Central Coast Local Health District Psychology Department Professional Development Day

The CCLHD Psychology Department will be holding their annual Professional Development Day for 2023 during Psychology Week on Thursday 16 November 9 am till 4.30 pm (in-person at the Auditorium, Gosford Hospital). The theme of the day is: “A Practice Update: Core Skills across the Life Span.” Although the event is targeted at psychologists, this event is open to all health professionals. The cost to attend the day is $30 (plus booking fee). Registrations must be completed online and full details of the day can be found on the Eventbrite registration page.

Topics and speakers for the day include:

1. Ms Amanda Gamble (Clinical Psychologist): “Adolescent Sleep: The Perfect Storm.” (Ms Gamble will be presenting online, but the audience is required to attend in-person at the Auditorium at Gosford Hospital).

2. Dr Ben Britton (Principal Psychologist, NHELHD, NSW Health): “Leading Health Behaviour Change: Helping other clinicians think like a psychologist.” (Dr Britton will be presenting in-person).

3. Professor Ron Rapee (School of Behavioural Sciences, Macquarie University): “An overview of current treatments and developments in the management of child and adolescent anxiety disorders.” (Prof Rapee will be presenting in-person).

4. Small group presentations by CCLHD Psychologists (topics and sign-up sheets available at registration desk on the day).

Kidney failure: integrating primary and tertiary care

Did you know that about 50% of referrals to nephrology services do not meet Australian nephrology referral guidelines? Early, effective referral to nephrology services is associated with positive patient outcomes. This case study-based activity will briefly outline medications required to slow progression of CKD. It will delve into when to refer and what comprises an effective referral to nephrology services. Optimal management CKD stage 5 complications will be addressed, along with kidney failure treatment options, particularly dialysis and the shared-decision pathway that can bring focus to this important process.
