Gloucester & Stroud essentials

Location

Gateway to the World Heritage Barrington Tops, Gloucester is a three-and-a-half to four hours’ drive north of Sydney, two hours from Newcastle, with a road trip from Sydney to Stroud just over three hours, and one-and-a-half hours from Newcastle. The Pacific Ocean is just over an hours’ drive east.

Transport

The nearest major airport is Newcastle located approximately 1.5hrs south, and while Gloucester does have an air strip it’s mainly used for private aviation.

Gloucester is on the main northern rail line from Sydney to Brisbane so it’s easy to get there by train. The town is serviced by several XPT trains per day in both directions.

Coach services run daily to Gloucester and Stroud departing Newcastle and Taree.

Shopping

Gloucester has a Woolworths supermarket that is open seven days a week.

The town also features an array of speciality retailers including boutiques, homewares, antiques, a book shop, pharmacy, garden centre, travel agency, health foods, an adventure and camping supplier, tea rooms, and a lolly shop.

The Gloucester Farmers Market is held the second Saturday of each month.

Stroud Friendly Grocer services the community seven days a week. The town is also home a hardware store, butchery, a pharmacy and gift store.

Health & Allied Health Services

Gloucester Soldiers Memorial Hospital maintains a 24-hour Emergency Department. It conducts minor general surgery and has limited obstetric, paediatric, and palliative care services.

Gloucester Community Health Service provides child and family health, community nursing, cardiac rehabilitation, respiratory rehabilitation, and an Aboriginal Health Clinic.
