Welcome to Gunnedah
Gunnedah Shire is the perfect combination of country living, an innovative business sector and a growing, vibrant community.
Our Shire is located in the beautiful northwest slopes of New South Wales, on the banks of the Namoi River.
Gunnedah Shire is the traditional land of the Gunn-e-darr people of the Kamilaroi tribe. The traditional language is known as Gomeroi (or commonly Gamilaraay). The name Gunnedah is thought to mean the “Place of White Stones”.
We boast a lifestyle that no city can offer. Wide open spaces, a friendly community, a good choice of schools, big industry and small business – it’s all here in Gunnedah. There is a huge variety of sports to choose from, a great cinema, a progressive art gallery, a wonderful pool complex and enviable shopping.
And we are supporting our community as they grow, through projects like the Gunnedah Saleyards Redevelopment, a new Koala Sanctuary, a state-of-the-art water treatment centre and an upgraded airport tarmac to allow the introduction of commercial flights in the future.
We are also a multicultural community that not only celebrates the many nationalities among us but has a warm relationship with our Sister City of Kolomotu’a in the Kingdom of Tonga.
Thank you to the many people who have chosen to live in Gunnedah Shire, and we welcome those who are looking forward to making this their home.
